A spirited and energetically executed original oil painting by Don Spaulding (1926–2014), one of America's most prolific and beloved illustrators of Western and frontier subjects. The painting depicts a hard-riding cavalry charge at full gallop — the lead rider, pistol raised and hat flying, surges toward the viewer on a charging horse with fellow troopers close behind, dust and urgency filling the composition with kinetic energy. The broad, confident brushwork and warm earthy palette are hallmarks of Spaulding's celebrated illustration style.

Signed "Don Spaulding" in the lower left. Inscribed on the reverse in the artist's own hand: "With all good wishes to my friend Ron — Sincerely, Don Spaulding, 3 Nov. 1993" — a personal gift inscription adding significant sentimental and historical provenance to the work.

Donald Spaulding was a nationally known painter and illustrator; known for his illustration of the Lone Ranger for the Dell comic book, as well his Military art, and unique Western art depicting the historical narratives of the US Calvary and the American West. After serving during World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre, and was part of the U.S. Occupational Forces following Japan’s unconditional surrender on September 2nd 1945. He used the GI bill to go to the world renowned Art Students League in New York to study illustration. He was among five artists chosen to study in Vermont at the summer studio of Norman Rockwell in 1950. They remained lifelong friends up until Rockwell’s death in 1978. Rockwell influenced his art and Spaulding went more into fine art and after that into history painting in the same vein as Rockwell, depicting the human aspect and storytelling style of painting.
