Original Pen & Ink Drawing on Parchment, 1874 By Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (French, 1835–1885) Signed and dated lower right: A. de Neuville / 1874.
A superb and intimate original pen and ink drawing by one of the most celebrated military artists of 19th-century France. The work depicts a fully equipped French infantryman standing at ease, intently reading or reviewing documents — a subject entirely characteristic of de Neuville's deeply personal and empathetic approach to the soldier's life. The figure is rendered with confident, energetic draughtsmanship, capturing uniform details, equipment, and posture with the authority of an artist who served as an officer and knew military life from the inside.
Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (31 May 1835 – 18 May 1885) was a French academic painter who studied under Eugène Delacroix. His dramatic and intensely patriotic subjects illustrated episodes from the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War, and the Zulu War, with works collected by the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. To create his scenes, de Neuville conducted careful research and drew on his experiences as a naval cadet and as an officer in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71.
This drawing dates to 1874 — the very peak of de Neuville's early fame. His celebrated painting The Last Cartridges (1873) had made his reputation overnight, and his Fight on a Railroad (1874) was equally successful — making this drawing a product of the most creatively charged year of his early career. It is easy to see the difference between the glorified and mythological war paintings of his predecessors and the work of de Neuville, who had actually been a soldier.
