A dynamic and brilliantly executed original oil study by renowned Civil War and military artist Keith Rocco, one of America's most celebrated painters of historical military subjects. This small-format preparatory study depicts a French Chasseur à Cheval — mounted and sword raised — in the thick of a violent cavalry engagement, with fallen enemy soldiers beneath his horse's hooves and the chaos of battle swirling around him. The loose, energetic brushwork of a preparatory study gives this piece a spontaneous vitality that finished works often lack, offering a rare window into Rocco's creative process.
Signed with Rocco's distinctive artist's monogram cipher in the lower left corner. Inscribed on the reverse: "Study for — A Chasseur's Fate, by Keith Rocco, collection of 1989, Ron and Alice Tunison" — providing full provenance documentation from a named private collection.
Presented in an ornate gilt composition frame with linen liner, befitting the Napoleonic subject matter.
