A rare and historically significant original pencil drawing by celebrated Civil War artist Bradley Schmehl, gifted directly by the artist to Ron Tunison as an expression of gratitude for Tunison's instrumental role in securing Schmehl's commission to paint "The 2nd Delaware in the Wheat Field at Gettysburg" — a major work now permanently installed in the Delaware Legislative Hall.

The drawing depicts a dense mass of Union infantry in combat, bayonets forward, flags flying, an officer on horseback directing the charge — a sweeping, energetic composition that captures the chaos and heroism of one of the bloodiest engagements of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. A small portrait study appears in the lower right, likely a character sketch related to the final commission.

The provenance is fully documented in a handwritten note affixed to the reverse, signed by Ron Tunison, describing the circumstances of the gift in detail — making this not only a fine work of art but a piece with a compelling story connecting artist, patron, and history.

Signed by Schmehl in pencil lower left. Presented in an ornate silver-finish frame with parchment mat.

Medium: Pencil on paper

Provenance: Gift from the artist to Ron Tunison, 2000; Collection of Alice & Ron Tunison
