A lively and expertly drafted original pen and ink illustration by George Woodbridge (1930–2004), the celebrated American illustrator best known for his decades of work for MAD Magazine and his extensive Civil War and military illustration. The drawing depicts a vivid scene of the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry — "Duryée's Zouaves" — one of the most famous and visually striking Union regiments of the Civil War — marching through a supply depot or encampment. The numeral "5" is clearly visible on a knapsack in the foreground, confirming the identification.
In the foreground two bearded Zouaves stride confidently toward the viewer, fully equipped with rifle muskets and field gear in their distinctive baggy red trousers, short jackets, and fezzes, while behind them officers consult a map and additional troops move through the scene. A period sign reading "Army Bread / Union Merchant Baking Company" adds an authentic and evocative period detail to the background.
The 5th New York was among the most celebrated regiments in the Army of the Potomac, suffering the highest casualty rate of any Union regiment at Second Bull Run in August 1862. Their exotic Zouave uniform made them among the most recognizable — and most painted — soldiers of the war.
Woodbridge's bold, confident line work and mastery of Civil War uniforms and equipment are on full display, making this a superb example of his historical illustration at its finest. Signed "G. Woodbridge" in the lower left.
