An original oil painting by Dale Gallon, the Gettysburg-based artist widely regarded as a founder of the modern Civil War fine-art genre. Signed and dated lower right ("DGallon '90"). The composition depicts a lone Confederate cavalryman drawn up short on a moonlit winter night — his agitated mount wheeling in deep snow as the rider, carbine brought to the ready across his chest, registers fresh tracks crossing the open ground ahead and the sudden danger of his exposed position. The trooper is rendered in a heavily caped greatcoat over shell jacket, forage cap, and yellow cavalry trim, with full field rig handled to Gallon's exacting documentary standard. A skeletal deadfall and bare trees frame the snow-covered field, the cold blue-grey palette heightening the isolation and tension from which the picture takes its title.

This is the original oil from which Gallon issued his 1990 signed limited-edition print of the same name (edition of 950). Housed in a quality gilt frame with linen liner and engraved brass title plaque: "CAUGHT IN THE OPEN / BY / DALE GALLON." Image size 32" x 25"; overall framed 39" x 32".

Original Gallon paintings rarely reach the market, as the artist has historically retained them for exhibition and commission — making the appearance of a finished, published composition a genuine opportunity for the serious collector.

Provenance: Ex–collection of Ron and Alice Tunison. Ron Tunison (1946–2013) was an internationally acclaimed sculptor of Civil War monuments, including four works on the Gettysburg battlefield — the General Crawford statue, the Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial, the Delaware State Memorial, and the Elizabeth Thorn Women's Memorial — as well as the Irish Brigade Monument at Antietam and the Patrick Cleburne monument at Ringgold Gap.
