Offered is an original graphite illustration by Keith Rocco, one of the foremost narrative military artists working in America today, executed for and published in On Campaign in the Age of Napoleon: The Art of Keith Rocco, where it appears at page 135 under the title "French and Austrian Casualties."

The drawing depicts the aftermath of an infantry action in the Napoleonic period. A French fusilier sits slumped and insensible among broken masonry and scattered rubble, his head fallen forward beneath the shako, the rolled greatcoat and three-strap knapsack still on his back and his cartridge box carried at his hip. Across the foreground sprawls a second casualty, presumably the Austrian of the title, boots and gaitered legs extended toward the viewer, with a discarded shako lying at lower right. The composition is a study in exhaustion and aftermath rather than action, and shows the close attention to uniform, accoutrement, and equipment detail for which Rocco's work is known. Rendered in graphite on light toned paper with sensitive handling of tone and texture; signed at lower right with the artist's boxed monogram cipher.

Keith Rocco has painted the common soldier of the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, and American Civil War periods for more than four decades, working closely with uniformologists and historians. His Napoleonic work appeared on nearly every cover of Napoleon, the international journal of the French Revolution and the age of Bonaparte, and the French periodical Uniformes placed him in the tradition of Remington and Detaille. Original drawings from the Napoleonic series seldom reach the market.

PUBLICATION

On Campaign in the Age of Napoleon: The Art of Keith Rocco, text by Matthew Delamater, introduction by the late David G. Chandler, published 2005 (Military History Press / Napoleon LLC), 208 pages. The present drawing is reproduced at page 135.

PROVENANCE

Ex collection of Ron F. Tunison (1946-2013), the sculptor of Cairo, New York, whose heroic bronzes include the Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial, the General Samuel W. Crawford monument near Little Round Top, the Delaware State Memorial bas-relief, and the Gettysburg Civil War Women's Memorial at Evergreen Cemetery, as well as the Irish Brigade monument at Antietam. The verso retains Rocco's original exhibition label, printed "FRENCH AND AUSTRIAN CASUALTIES / ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION / PAGE 135, 'ON CAMPAIGN IN THE AGE OF NAPOLEON,'" and above it a note in Tunison's hand, signed by him, recording that he bought the drawing from Rocco on Sunday, August 27, 2006, when the two men were featured guests together at the Hudson Valley Toy Soldier and Military Figure Show in White Plains, New York. Direct from the artist to a fellow artist of the first rank, with the transaction documented in the buyer's own hand — as clean a chain as an illustration of this kind is likely to carry.

CONDITION AND PRESENTATION

Very good throughout, the drawing bright and unfaded with no visible foxing, staining, or handling wear. Handsomely presented in a double mat with grey and white bevels behind glass, housed in an ornate gilt frame with leaf-and-ribbon and egg-and-dart moulding. Original hanging wire in place; labels and note intact on the backing.
