Large hand-colored lithographic view titled in the lower margin: "BIRDS' EYE VIEW OF THE CAMP OF THE 67TH REG'T. P.V. ANNAPOLIS, M.D. / On the ground occupied by the Troops of Washington & Lafayette." Printer's credit at lower left reads "Lith'd by L. Rosenthal, 327 Walnut St. Philad'a," with the publication line at lower right, "Pub'd & Designed by Edwin Rees." Copyright notice within the margin records entry according to Act of Congress in the year 1863 by Edwin Rees in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
The regimental staff is engraved in script beneath the publication line: Colonel J. F. Staunton, Lt. Col. H. B. Burnham, Major H. White, and Adj't J. F. Young — a roster consistent with the published organization of the 67th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, organized at Philadelphia in March 1862 under Colonel John F. Staunton. The regiment left the state for Annapolis on 3 April 1862 and remained in eastern Maryland on provost, railroad, and guard duty, furnishing guards for Camp Parole after its establishment near the town, until it moved to Harper's Ferry in February 1863. The view accordingly appears to record the regiment's 1862 encampment, published under the 1863 copyright after the regiment had left the post. The 67th subsequently suffered heavily at Second Winchester in June 1863 and served through the Overland Campaign, Monocacy, and the Shenandoah with the Sixth Corps.
An elevated panoramic composition looking out over the encampment toward the water. Company streets of conical Sibley tents fill the middle ground, wall tents of the field and staff clustered near a central flagstaff flying the national colors; several tents carry legible painted or lettered designations. Ten line companies are drawn up in formation across the foreground parade, with mounted officers, a regimental band and drum corps at the right, and a lettered key (A through K and others) placed against the formations and camp features. Distant background shows shipping under sail, outbuildings, wagon teams, and rolling wooded country. Hand coloring is applied throughout in blue, green, and flesh tones, strongest in the uniformed ranks.
Louis N. Rosenthal of Philadelphia was among the most active American lithographers of the Civil War period, and his firm produced a substantial body of regimental camp views of this type. Edwin Rees is credited here as both designer and publisher.
Sheet approximately 19 x 22 inches. A wooden rod is affixed along the left edge of the sheet.
Overall toning and age-darkening to the sheet, heavier at the margins. Loss and staining at the upper right corner with an associated brown stain extending into the margin. Chipping, short edge tears, and irregular losses along the right and lower edges. Horizontal creases and old fold lines across the lower portion of the sheet, one running into the printed image. Scattered foxing. Faint pencil notation in the lower left margin. Printed image and lettering remain clear and legible throughout, with the hand coloring bright. Presently housed on a backing board in a clear sleeve. [ss] [ph:L]
