This commission document is in virtually perfect condition for its age, and finely fleshed out by the Adjutant General and Governor Richard Oglesby. No tears or stains are observed, and all text is bold and clear. Two vertical folds and a single horizontal fold are noted without any perforation or overly conspicuous crease lines. The Adjutant’s Seal is complete and without defect. Dimensions are 11.75” x 17.5”.
Hamilton Dox was a 36-year-old Chicago resident when he enlisted on 1/4/1864 as a Major. He was commissioned into the Field and Staff of the 12th Illinois. On 8/3/1864 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel on 10/13/1865 as detailed by this document and available records. He mustered out on 5/29/1866 as a brevet Brigadier General. He passed away in Chicago on 11/12/1903.
