Partly-printed discharge document, 2 pages on a single folded sheet, headed "United States Volunteer Service," issued to Corporal Halsey B. Sherwood of Captain A.J. Kellogg's Company, 2nd Regiment Connecticut Volunteers. Manuscript entries in period ink complete the printed form, providing enlistment and discharge dates, physical description, and place of birth. Signed by Charles W. Moore, 1st Lieutenant Commanding the Company, and countersigned by the mustering officer.

 

TRANSCRIPTION

"Know Ye, That Halsey B. Sherwood a Corporal of Captain A.J. Kellogg Company, 2nd Regiment of CONNECTICUT VOLUNTEERS, who was enrolled on the Seventh day of May one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one to serve during three months upon a requisition of the President of the United States to suppress insurrection, is hereby honorably discharged from the service of the United States, this seventh day of August 1861, at New Haven Connecticut by reason of being mustered out of service, on the expiration of his term.

Said Halsey B. Sherwood was born in Yonkers in the State of New York is twenty three years of age, five foot five inches high, Light complexion, Grey eyes, Brown hair, and by occupation, when enlisted, a Polisher.

Given at New Haven this seventh day of August 1861.

The 2nd Connecticut Infantry was one of the state's original three-months' militia regiments, mustered in May 1861 in response to Lincoln's initial call for troops.
