Printed discharge certificate, "To All Whom It May Concern," completed in manuscript for Daniel Lawson, Private, Company L (per enrollment date), 21st Regiment New York Cavalry Volunteers. Enrolled December 28, 1863, to serve three years or during the war; discharged August 8, 1865, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, by reason of General Order No. 77, A.G.O., War Department, April 1865 — the order authorizing muster-out of volunteer regiments following the close of hostilities.

Soldier described as born in Allegany County, New York; age 21; 5 feet 6 inches high; fair complexion; hazel eyes; light hair; occupation farmer at time of enrollment. Discharge given at Fort Leavenworth by the officer commanding the regiment, signature reading W. Wyman, Capt.

Handsome period form with engraved eagle-and-flag vignette and ornamental calligraphic heading. The document carries several contemporary ink and rubber-stamp endorsements on the recto, including a paymaster's notation dated August 9, 1865, signed by J.M. Ellis, Paymaster, and transit/office stamps dated August 10 and August 12, 1865. The verso bears the standard printed "Oath of Identity" form (unexecuted) along with a period clerk's recording notation: "State of New York, Tompkins County Clerk's Office. Recorded Feb. 2, 1867, in Book No. 1, Soldiers' Discharges, Page 360" — documentation that the veteran formally recorded his discharge locally, likely in connection with a pension or bounty claim.

The 21st New York Cavalry, nicknamed the "Griswold Light Cavalry," organized at Troy, N.Y., in the fall of 1863 and saw extensive service in the Shenandoah Valley with the Army of West Virginia and the Army of the Shenandoah. Company L mustered in during December 1863, matching this soldier's enrollment date. Following its Shenandoah service, the regiment was posted on duty at Washington, D.C. through June 1865 and then at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, through September 1865 — precisely the period and location of this discharge.

CONDITION: Expected period fold lines; closed separation at upper left corner with no loss to text (visible in photos); toning and scattered staining consistent with age; otherwise legible and displays well.  [ss][ph:L]
