Dated "Camp Stoneman /Washington, DC. /July 12, 1865. Addressed to "Bob". 4 pp. in ink on line paper, "5 x 8.  Exhibits fold-marks, else VG.

John R. Craig was commissioned as Captain into the US Volunteers Quartermaster Dept. , 7/12/1862. He was brevetted to Major, 3/13/1865 and mustered out 10/7/1865.

In this letter Bvt. Major Craig writes that "I am looking for orders every day telling me that my services are no longer required," going on to say that "I do not know what is to be done with this command and do not care much," as he has been trying to get out of it for some time, and the war having been over for three months.

Of his commanding officer he has this to say: "Gen Carroll has not played the part he should have done. He s one of Hancock's stepp blocks and the old Cock uses him just as he wishes and Carroll plays off on his staff." Concludes by saying, "Bob, this command is not worth a Damn."

Interesting letter by a Bvt. Major who is woefully weary of the army by mid July 1865, but who also won't be discharged until October 1865. In protective sleeve, accompanied by brief background material.  [JP]  [ph:L]
