Letter from Isaac VanDerwerken to John S. VanDerwerkin (cover address “Northumberland / Saratoga Co. / NY. “). One page in ink, on lined paper. Exhibits fold-marks, else fine.
In this letter VanDerwerken apologizes to his brother, evidently a business partner, for not sending more than 12.5 ounces of gold, explaining that he is going into another business and for that reason could not send more.
Text:
June 2rd. I send you the first part of this letter not having time to write a new one , and as I am going in another kind of business and knowing the amount of money I shall want before I get returns again I only send you twelve and a half ounces of gold, showing you the various shapes, it is a mere sample of California gold, but the most we get is fine and much of it is fine as flower [dust?] This small amount I send you had better keep if you are not to hard up for change, as I shall endeavor to send you some next month. I am sorry I was not here in time on Saturday to send you this in the steamer that left on that day. It was leaving the wharf just as I came in. So this letter will lay in the office until the 15th.
I understand that Patrick Cown is at Sacramento making and selling mineral waters, I wish you would write me all the news and particulars in business at home, address you letter in future to me, to San Francisco. I shall be in here every month on business, if you are hard up for cash let me know and I will try to send you some almost anytime, without I have uncommon bad luck. But I hope and try for the best, give me respects to all enquiring friends. I remain your brother Isaac VanDerwerken.”
Interesting California Gold Rush collectible. In protective sleeve. [JP] [ph:L]
