Dated “General Hospital #20 / Louisville, KY, March 25th, 1863.” Addressed to “John McQuaid.” One page in ink on unlined paper, 9.75” x 7.25. Exhibits fold-marks, else VG & entirely legible.

Text: Sir…..Geo. P McQuaid Private, 25th Ill. Regt., Co. “E”, died at this hospital of erysipelas on the 2nd day of March. He left in our charge some money & clothing which his nearest relations can get (Or proper heirs) by giving sufficient evidence that they are his legal heirs, & sending an order to have money & other effects delivered over to any person you may think proper to receive them, or, have them Expressed to any point you or they may whish, whoever they, he or she may be. Yours truly / aten[dant] L. D. La Vergne / Hospital Steward / N.S. Drury.

A resident of Tuscola, IL, George P. McQuaid enlisted and was mustered as a Corporal into “H” Co., 25th Illinois Infantry, 8/4/ 1861. Reduced in ranks, he was mortally wounded in action at Stones River, TN, 12/31/1863, and died at General Hospital # 20 in Louisville, KY, 12/31/1863.

Organized in August 1863, the 25th Illinois served in the western theater, attached to the Army of the Ohio, and then to the Army of the Cumberland. It participated in the 1862 Battles of Pea Ridge, Ark. the Siege of Corinth, Miss., and Perryville, KY, and Stones River, TN, where Pvt McQuaid was mortally wounded in action. In 1863 It was present at the Battle of Chickamauga, and engaged in Tullahoma Campaign and the November battles for Chattanooga. In the 1864 Atlanta Campaign it was engaged at Kennesaw Mountain through the July Battle of Atlanta before being mustered out in early August. During service it lost 81 killed and mortally wounded and 149 men by disease for a total of 232, of whom Pvt. McQuaid was one.

Final notification concerning an Illinois Private who a died a lingering hospital death in the wake of wounds received at Stones River. In protective sleeve.  [jp][ph:L]
