Letter measures 5" x 8", attesting to the good character of staff officer Capt. Warren S. Reese, in light of depredations allegedly committed by troops in his command upon Confederate citizens in the Jefferson County, Alabama vicinity: "Head Qrs. Cav. Corps, July 2nd 1864. It affords me pleasure to add my testimony to the universal good character of Capt. Reese. He has been serving with me for some two years and has obtained a character second to no officer as a disciplinarian. While with me Capt. Reese has at all times kept his command under good discipline never permitting his men to struggle or depredate upon the property of citizens. Jos. Wheeler, Maj. Genl."

On reverse is a partial petition note, in which officers (whose signatures are no longer present) have originated the assessment of Capt. Reese: "We the undersigned officers being citizens of North Ala., and living as we are most of us, in the adjoining Counties to Jefferson feel that great injustice has been done by the charges sent to Capt. Reese Comdg. Battalion, concerning outrages committed by our men while there. We furthermore certify on honor that we heard no citizens complaining of ill treatment except one John Truss. This man we were informed on our arrival would certainly object to anything like right, as reguards allowing us to have forage. And we even further certify on honor that we know the citizens had no right to complain - that many of our friends and…"
