Text: 1. Each Regimental surgeon (unless already so provided) will select a suitable private from the ranks to attend him as an orderly who will carry a Hospital Knapsack. (See sec. 1302 p. 290 of Revis. U.S.
Army Reg. Ed. 1861).
2. Each Regimental surgeon will request the Colonel of his Regiment to detail said private for the duty above specified. And when said detail is made the Surgeon will give due notice of the fact. With name of the orderly to these Head Quarters.
3. Each Regimental Surgeon is required to set aside from the Medical Stores 2 bottle of Brandy and 2 of Whiskey upon a sudden call into the field for action.
4. It is recommended to the Surgeon and Assistant Surgeon of each Regiment to provide himself with a flask or canteen to be filled with Brandy or Whiskey and to be carried on his person on the march and on the field whereby he may at once relieve the wounded and fainting soldiery who might otherwise perish.”
