“It has come to the knowledge of the Commanding General, that notwithstanding all his efforts to prevent the introduction of intoxicating liquors into the island among this command, to be used as a beverage, we are still followed by the curse of the army….All sales, therefore, within this department, will be punished by instant expulsion of the party offending, if a civilian, or by court-martial if an officer or soldier. All intoxicating liquors kept for sale or to be used as a beverage, will be seized and destroyed, or confiscated for hospital use / Major-General Butler.” In protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
