A historically evocative piece of Civil War correspondence written by Henry Chamberlain, a Private in Company "A," Virginia 11th Cavalry (C.S.A.). The letter is dated October 22, 1863, headed "Camp 11th Va., Culpeper C.H." — placing the writer at Culpeper Court House, Virginia, headquarters of the Army of Northern Virginia during the fall 1863 campaign.
Writing to his uncle, Chamberlain conveys the somber duty of forwarding news of a fellow soldier's death to the man's family, asking his uncle to deliver the enclosed letter with care. He notes the regiment has been "very actively engaged" and that the campaign has been "very successful, especially in a moral sense." He closes warmly, reporting good health and sending love to family.
Accompanied by a printed American Civil War Research Database soldier history documenting Chamberlain's service record, including his parole at Fort McHenry, MD, June 3, 1863.
Condition: Very Good. Uniform toning to blue-gray paper; small period stain; ink legible throughout; no tears. [ss] [ph:L]
