Envelope addressed in a fine period hand to "Mrs. F. C. Chamberlain / Care of General J. L. Chamberlain / Annapolis / Maryland." It is franked with a 3c rose Washington of the 1861 issue, tied by a grid cancel. A New York circular datestamp, apparently JUL 11, is struck at left. As is usual, there is no year date.
HISTORICAL NOTE
On June 18, 1864, Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain commanded the First Brigade, First Division, Fifth Corps. He was shot through both hips while leading the assault on the Confederate works at Rives' Salient before Petersburg. Grant believed the wound was mortal and promoted him brigadier general on the field. This promotion is traditionally described as the only one Grant made in that manner during the war. Chamberlain was taken to the general hospital at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. His wife, Frances Caroline "Fanny" Adams Chamberlain, came from Brunswick, Maine, to be with him through his recovery. He returned to the field that November. In April 1865 he was designated to receive the formal surrender of arms of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox. He suffered from the Petersburg wound for the rest of his life and died at Portland on February 24, 1914.
Three details fit the summer of 1864, when Fanny was at her husband's side: the rank of "General" in the address, the Annapolis destination, and the July postmark.
