DESCRIPTION:
A one-page manuscript letter on lined stationery, docketed at top "DETAILED ACCT. MONEY DUE DECEASED PRIVATE C.S.A.," written from the Second Auditor's Office of the Confederate Treasury Department in Richmond and addressed to attorney F.L. Brockett. The letter documents the settlement of the estate of Private Caius M. Shelton of Captain Hobson's Company F, 4th Virginia Cavalry, who died October 2, 1862, roughly six months after his April 1, 1862 enlistment. The certificate itemizes back pay, an allowance for use and risk of the private's own horse (a standard practice in Confederate cavalry regiments, which unlike Federal cavalry required troopers to furnish their own mounts), and a clothing commutation, less stoppages — totaling $107.80, payable to Brockett as attorney for Mary M. Shelton, administratrix of the deceased soldier's estate.
The 4th Virginia Cavalry served in the Army of Northern Virginia's cavalry corps and saw extensive action throughout 1862, including the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days, and the Maryland Campaign — any of which may account for Shelton's death, though the cause is not stated in this document.
Old ink notation "54TH VA CAV" at top appears to be a later archival misreading of the regiment (correctly the 4th Virginia Cavalry, not the 54th).
CONDITION: Expected folds, light toning and edge wear, small separation along one horizontal fold, otherwise legible and complete. [ss][ph:L]
