NO. 358/ VOL. XIV. Dated New York, August 9, 1862. 16 pp. [305-320]. This issue appeared as the Army of the Potomac huddled under the protection of Federal gunboats at Harrison's Landing, waiting to be re-embarked for passage back to Washington following the collapse of McClellan's peninsula campaign against Richmond. The cover illustration features a gathering of armed Union citizens in Covington, KY, alarmed at the incursion of John Morgan's rebels at Cynthiana near Cincinnati.
Interior illustrations include sketches of a U.S. Mail boat at Harrison's Landing, and a portrait of "California Joe", the famed Berdan's Sharpshooter. Also a map of the Mississippi river showing the Yazoo basin location where the rebel ram Arkansas disabled the gunboat Carondelet during its July 15th run through the Union fleet to Vicksburg. And an intriguing double-view of the operation of a Union 13 inch mortar.
Editorially the magazine notes the distress of the British cotton textile industry due to the Union blockade of southern ports, and registers the following judgement: "Had she [England] behaved loyally and in good faith toward the United States, the present pressure on her industry would not have existed, and the ruin that stares her in the face, and of which the future offers no stay or mitigation, would have been averted… "As ye sow, so shall ye reap".
In terms of condition, the paper is lightly yellowed and exhibits light soiling at the extremities, and display a 4" inch rear page tear from the outer side margin. Else VG plus, and highly collectible. [Frank Leslie's Illustrated and Harper's Weekly were the "Life and "Look" magazines of the Civil War-era].
