When the war cut off the flow of Harpers Weekly and Frank Leslie’s papers to the south, the “Southern Illustrated News” was created in Richmond in September 1862 to fill the gap in supplying illustrated newspapers to a hungry public. They were often hard pressed to get many illustrations into the paper, but it was successful enough to last until September 1865. This is a framed copy of their March 28, 1863, issue (Volume 1, Number 29,) which features a portrait of A.P. Hill on the front page. Hill was a West Point graduate who resigned from the army at the start of the war and rose rapidly from colonel to major-general in May 1862, at which rank he is shown in the portrait. After Jackson’s death he became a lieutenant general and corps commander. He was often invalided by sickness, but earned a reputation as one of Lee’s fighting generals and was killed in action on April 2, 1865, at Petersburg. Here at Gettysburg Hill’s troops were at the forefront of fighting on all three days.

The newspaper is matted and framed (a job done probably thirty or forty years ago.) Frame measures 19" x 24". There are some waterstains to the newspaper at upper right and at the left edge that do not affect the image. Folds run vertically and horizontally. The horizontal fold runs across Hill’s eyes, but without much loss or damage. Photographs had a much narrower distribution than newspaper woodcuts in the south during the war. The image probably represents how most of the wartime population of the south pictured him.  [sr]
