This Union occupation newsletter was published by the 6th U.S. Army Corps, on the press of the Danville Register.
Dated “Danville, VA., April 28, 1863. Vol. 1, No. 2. One page, 18.25” x 12.5, 5 columns. Exhibits fold-marks, 6th Corps Greek Cross, upper left margin. Contains centerfold announcement: “Danville Occupied By Our Forces / A Paper Started / No One Hurt / All Delighted”.
Includes a “Euloguim” on the Sixth Corps from General Meade—“…Candor compels me to say that in my opinion , the decisive movement of this campaign, which resulted in the capture of the army of Northern Virginia was the gallant and successful charge of the Sixth Corps, on the morning of the 2nd of April.”
Also notice from Corps commander Gen. Horatio Wright that Johnston’s Army had surrendered to Gen. Sherman on April 26th.
Also a dispatch from Boston requesting “10,000 copies of you valuable sheet. Tell general commanding, and all the officers, we are proud of them. The North salutes the old 6th. If you stay long enough we will send you a Boston Dinner.”
From Portland, Maine: “Each Southern breeze is wafting over our city the glory of the 6th Corps. Tell our Maine boys to be virtuous and they will be happy.”
From the “Personals” column: “Will the lady in black who bowed to an officer as he rode past her house this morning, favor him with an interview at her garden gate, at nine o’clock this evening.”
