[Mexican war coverage] Vol. X—Number 2.  8 pp., 17.5 x 12.5,” five columns. Exhibits slight horizontal fold-mark, light chipping at the margins, patches of slight to light foxing throughout. Else VG & entirely legible.

The front page contains much commentary pertaining to the Mexican War then in progress. Headlines include “Capitulation of Monterrey” and “The Three Million Bill”. The former discusses the controversary surrounding the surrender of Monterrey by the Mexicans to Gen. Taylor’s forces in return to for a two-month armistice and being permitted to march away. Gen. had received the commendation of Congress, but was now threatened with censure, in light of a critical letter from Gen. Henderson, one of Taylor’s subordinate commanders. Col. Jefferson Davis, one of Taylor’s regimental commanders,  wrote a strong letter of support contradicting Henderson’s charges against Taylor.

The “Three Million Dollar Bill” was the Army appropriation bill, which opened all manner of debate concerning war aims in terms of territory to be taken from Mexico, and if so, whether slavery was to be allowed in these territories. Already, in the Mexican War appropriations bill, are present some of the seeds of the coming Civil War. And, the Picayune coverage is quite extensive.

Interior columns present further war coverage, with headlines as follows:  “Later from Tampico—Loss of the Ship Ondiaka--Col. De Russy and four companies of Louisiana Volunteers Wrecked—The Mexicans in possession of the wreck—Conflicting rumors-Reported Battle at Chihuahua, etc.”

“The Texas Rangers [Col. Hayes Texans in the Battle of Monterrey]”

“Later from Vera Cruz—Santa Ana Not Assassinated—His Gambling Operations—Proposed Movement to Tula—General La Vega in Command at Vera Cruz—Resources of the Garrison--Battle of El Paso—Defeat of the Mexicans—Dissolution of the Ministry.”

Pages seven and eight contain “Still Later From Tampico” and “later from the Brazos” & “The Mouth of the Rio Grande.”

Excellent Mexican War newspaper collectible. Fascinating glimpse from 1847 New Orleans. In protective sleeve, w/ white card backing.    [jp] [ph:L]
