Vol. IX—No. 470., 16 pp. [817-832], four columns, w/numerous illustrations, and cartoons. This final issue from 1865, the concluding year of Civil War, is loaded with religious Christmas imagery, beginning with the front cover illustration featuring “The Holy Family.” Many of these illustrations are laced with reminders of the late war. Most striking is the double-age centerfold — “Merry Christmas to All”—which contains a montage of scenes, including one of “Ulysses The Giant Killer,” featuring a panoramic stage with Gen. Grant standing over the heads of R.E. Lee, Richard Ewell and A.P. Hill, surrounded by cartoonish figures of Sherman, Sheridan, Thomas, Meade, Farragut, Kilpatrick, Seward, Stanton, and Welles…with John Bull, Napoleon III and Maximillian of Mexico looking on in dismay. An extraordinary illustration.
Exhibits mounting dots and light chipping at the extremities. All pages have minor paper loss at lower left corner. Else VG, and attractive. Superb collectible. In protectives sleeve, w/white card backing. [jp][ph:L]
