Vol. VIII—Number 2. 4pp., 27” x 20.75, 8 columns. Exhibits fold-marks, w/sun faded along upper right margin. Else VG and entirely legible.
An old Richmond paper with a large readership, the Richmond enquirer was established in 1804, and at the outset of the Civil War the Civil War was publishing daily, weekly and bi-weekly editions. In editorial stance it supported and was generally in accord with the Jefferson Davis administration, as opposed to the Richmond Examiner whose editor John Moncure Davis vehemently detested Davis and any personnel changes and policies issuing from his administration.
Issued a week after the Battle of Shiloh in the west (April 6-7, 1862), the front page features extracts - “Late Northern Intelligence” - from various newspapers. With considerable foreign and local intelligence tucked in on the other three. In all, a solid early war specimen of the Richmond Enquirer. In protective sleeve. [JP][ph:L]
