Vol. XX—No. 5/ Whole No. 1585. 2 pp., 18 x 25”, six columns. Exhibits fold-marks, light yellowing and slight chipping of right margin. Else VG & entirely legible.

The Richmond Christian Advocate was a Methodist newspaper published weekly between 1837 and 1901.This issue was published in the weeks just following Lincoln’s January 1st, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation and the Battle of Stones River, TN.

While the paper’s coverage reflects the state and fortunes the war, its tone is primarily religious. Front page columns include “The Voice of the Pulpit in the North,” featuring a treatment of the “notorious black Republican” preacher, Henry Ward Beecher. Followed by a “Letter from [southern] Bishop Andrew.” Followed by a lengthy “Letter from the Rebel Naval Officer Matthew Maury,” political in tone, blasting the Lincoln administration. Other front page columns include the “Youth’s Department—Honor Thy Father and Mother”, and “Poetry—The Empty sleeve.” Along with numerous obituaries and an advertisement for “The Confederate Spelling Book.”

The rear page contains more obituaries, a “Faith In Providence” editorial and a eulogy to “General Robert E. Lee.” Solid war-time Richmond newspaper, with religious tone and Methodist affiliation. In protective sleeve, w/black card backing.  [jp] [ph:L]
