This is an original edition of “The London Gazette Extraordinary”, dated Friday, September 24, 1779.

The London Gazette Extraordinary was an irregularly published, special edition of the official government publication, The London Gazette, used to publish important and urgent information, such as military dispatches and state intelligence. For example, there were “Extraordinary” issues published after major events like the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, the surrender of Napoleon in 1814, and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. These special editions were used to provide immediate, official updates to the British public during times of crisis or significant public interest.

This issue contains multiple reports on the events relating to the “Penobscot Expedition. This event began as a joint Continental Army/Navy operation to stop British attempts to control the upper Massachusetts Bay [now Maine] coastline. The British had begun construction of a fort at Castine. Initial Continental assaults were completely successful and the British commander was ready to surrender, but was never asked by the Americans. Extended bickering between the American Army and Navy commanders allowed a British relief fleet to arrive and secure an absolute route of the Continental naval forces.

Incredible content here includes several reports of the action, lists of the ships in the “Rebel Fleet” lost and how many guns were mounted on each, and British loses from the Royal Artillery, the 74th, and 82nd Regiment of Foot.
