The May 10, 1861, issue of “The Philadelphia Inquirer” covering events during the early stages of the Civil War, which had begun less than a month prior with the firing on Fort Sumter on April 12. The first lines are “The Southern Revolt, The Federal Troops Marching South.”

This issue features an illustration of a “minie” cartridge and a soldier shooting at a target. Accompanying text details ammunition and the science of shooting to the novice readers. Much additional War news is included in these eight pages.

Paper pages show wear and small tears on the edges and especially at the center fold.

From the collection of author/publisher Dean Thomas. These illustrations and content were used by him in several well-known books.  [jet] [ph:L]
