Original complete four-page issue of the National Intelligencer (Vol. XXV, No. 8661), the semi-weekly Washington paper that functioned as the quasi-official journal of the federal government during the era. Printed October 19, 1824.
The centerpiece of this issue is an original printing of a letter by Thomas Jefferson, appearing on page 2 under the heading "JEFFERSON—LAFAYETTE." Dated Monticello, October 9, 1824 and signed in type "TH: JEFFERSON," the letter is addressed to Robert G. Scott, Esq., declining on grounds of "age and infirmities" the invitation of the Virginia volunteer companies to join the reception for the Marquis de Lafayette at Yorktown. Jefferson recalls the 1781 campaign in which Lafayette's "military manoeuvres covered [Virginia] from the robberies and ravages of an unsparing enemy" — a direct reference to the Yorktown campaign whose anniversary the celebration marked. The issue's Washington column further documents Lafayette's departure aboard the steamboat Potomac for the Yorktown ceremonies, providing rich context to one of the defining patriotic events of the period: the Nation's Guest tour of 1824–25.
Additional period content includes front-page coverage of the death of King Louis XVIII of France and the accession of the Count d'Artois (Charles X); reporting on the contested 1824 presidential election (Pennsylvania electoral ticket for Henry Clay, Connecticut returns favoring Crawford); dispatches from the Greek War of Independence; and a reprinting of Charles Lamb's essay "Confessions of a Drunkard" on page 3.
Condition: Complete sheet with intact masthead. Foxing and staining present (heaviest at the upper right of page 1), with fold separations and edge chipping/loss at the margins. Sold as-is, consistent with age and price. [ss] [ph:L]
