Letter Text:
“I heartily approve the recommendation of Lieut. Nilleston By Col Kitching. His appointment would be an excellent one for the regiment, and his services fully entitle him to the promotion it would give / Henry J. Hunt / Brig. Gen’l Ch of A’y.”
Plaque inscription: “Henry J. Hunt/ 1819-1889…West Point graduate of 1839, Hunt was the driving force in welding the Army of the Potomac’s artillery into a superb organization. His guns covered the Unio retreat at 1st Bull and defeated the Confederate infantry at Malvern Hill and later during Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. Unlike other commanders Grant worked well with him and placed him in charge of the Petersburg Siege operations.”
