“Capt Thos J. Ho___ ?/ Halls Hill/ send George in/ with things at/ once to Rowley/ Danl Butterfield/ ____(?) Jan 22/62”

Daniel Butterfield was a prominent figure in the Union Army,  eventually attaining the rank of Major General while serving as divisional commander in Fitz John Porters  Fifth Corps,  and later  serving as chief of staff to both Joe Hooker and George Meade. He is best known, perhaps, as composer of the famed bugle call “Taps.” In this terse  note, Butterfield writes  to a Captain  at Hall’s Hill, VA, (located within Alexandria County) asking that he send “George in with things at once”  to an illegible location. Invites further research. Solid “Dan Butterfield” collectible. Invites further research.  In protective sleeve.  [jp][ph:L]
