Pre-printed document filled in with ink. From “The People of the State of New York….” To Peter Hess, Captain in the 140th Regiment of Infantry New York State Volunteers, with rank from August 23rd, 1864. Commission is dated February 28, 1865.
Item is framed under glass. There are folds visible and the commission was likely trimmed and somehow mounted. Back of frame is sealed with multiple strips of wood. The ink has faded but remains readable. Measures 15” x 12”.
Peter Hess was 26 years old on August 26, 1862 when he enlisted in Rochester, NY, as a sergeant in Company B, 140th NY. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on November 25, 1863 and to 1st Lieutenant on July 19, 1864. He mustered out on June 3, 1865.
Hess was born on July 1, 1835 in Bavaria, Germany. He died on April 10, 1899 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, New York. [jet] [ph:L]
