“Lt. W.H. Hood, A/Gnl / Has permission to go to Piqua Ohio via Cincinnati on military business subject to further orders by telegraph / Jas. S. Negley / Major Genl.”
A native Pennsylvanian, James S. Negley performed well as a Union commander at Murfreesboro, TN, and again in the campaign that drove Rebels from Chattanooga in late summer 1863. At the Battle of Chickamauga, however, while commanding the 2nd Division of George Thomas Army of the Cumberland, he was bitterly castigated by two fellow division commanders for desertion and cowardice in taking his division from the field. Cleared in the aftermath by a board of inquiry, although assigned to post command in Louisville, KY, Negley never again commanded troops in the field.
Fine piece for aficionados of Union general’s correspondence and signatures. [jp] [ph:L]
