You have been indefatigable & able & discreet in you present-position & I do not doubt but that you would show the same facility in higher positions.
With best wishes for your success—I am Capt. very truly yours / JG Foster/ Maj. Gen. Commanding.
An 1846 West Point graduate, J.G. Foster won two brevets during the Mexican War and was severely wounded at Molino del Rey, and later present at the 1861 bombardment of Ft. Sumter. Accompanying Ambrose Burnside’s North Carolina Expedition, he was assigned to command the Department of North Carolina, and later the Department and Army of the Ohio, relinquishing commanded due to injuries when a horse fell on him. He finished the war in command of the Department of Florida. In the post-war phase, up until his death in 1874, he served as assistant to the chief of Engineers.
A distinguished and highly competent soldier was Gen. Foster. An excellent piece for collectors of Civil War general’s letters and memorabilia. In protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
