Housed in a modern 12 ¼” x 18 ½” black frame.

At bottom is a clipped signature in ink on lined paper measuring 5”x 2 ½”:  “Geo G. Meade / Maj. Genl. U.S.A.” This signature would date to late in the war following Meade's promotion to Major General.

Included in the frame is an original period engraving of Meade from an ambrotype taken by Mathew Brady, with a scene from the Battle of Gettysburg.  This engraving is from Volume III of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867, and as noted below the engraving was done “Expressly for this work”.

Engraving and signature are in excellent condition; frame shows scattered minor wear.  [ld][ph:L]
