Dated Jan. 1863, New Orleans, Louisiana. One page in ink, 5” x 8. Exhibits fold-marks. Paper is somewhat yellowed while remaining entirely legible. Text:
“Dr. Sir...Your note of yesterday received I am sorry it has turned out so bad but do the best you you can--
McBride goes down this morning and had had best make a bargain with him to work in commission and you come to the city and see me before closing with him / Yours truly / A.J. Butler.”
The older brother of Major General Benjamin Butler, Colonel A.J. Butler served under Gen. Butler in 1862 New Orleans and was his business factor in acquiring Confederate property via auction sales forced by the Congressional 1862 Confiscation act. General Butler greatly enriched himself and his family during his 1862 tenure as Federal Military Governor of Louisiana. As the above note implies, his agent brother was right in the thick of it. [In protective sleeve]. Accompanied by woodcut civilian portrait of Andrew Jackson Butler.
Excellent Ben Butler family collectible. In protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
