Controversial is the legacy of General Benjamin Butler, the famed “Beast” of New Orleans. He held several professional titles during his life including lawyer, general, governor, and congressman. Best known today for his military governorship of New Orleans and largely ineffective leadership at the head of the Army of the James, he enjoyed considerably more success in his other ventures. By the 1870’s, he successfully lobbied for the passage of the 1875 Civil Rights Act and became a champion of workers’ rights on the national stage.
This letter is folded into thirds and is typed on thin paper from the “Law Officers of Benj. F. Butler, Washburn and Webster” at “No. 6 Ashburton Place” in Boston. It is dated July 3rd, 1888 and concerns a patent inquiry from a case in Texas. It was directed to a lawyer named C. D. Barrett, then residing and working in New Mexico. A clear and prominent signature in Butler’s hand concludes the letter. The reverse features a catalogue summary and date written on the front facing fold in black ink. Overall measurements are 8” x 10”. There is no staining or notable damage – all text and handwriting are very clear.
An interesting piece from the post-war life of one of the Civil War’s most notable figures. A chance to add Butler to your collection. [cm][ph:L]
