Laura Keene is mostly remembered for being the female lead in the play “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre the night of the Lincoln assassination. However, history should remember her for the entire trailblazing, exciting, and fulfilling life she led as a famous actress, theatre manager, mother, and entrepreneurial woman.
While in New York in 1858, Laura signed this envelope on January 18, 1858, while preparing for her theatrical run in the play “Green Bushes”. The paper is in great condition with sharps edges and corners. A folding crease is noted at far right. Across the front is Laura’s signature followed by the date of signing. The surface is clean and all writing is bold and sharp, with mild oxidation to a hue of brown in some areas. The reverse is also clean and features a scalloped flap. A small penciled notation reads “TON”. Overall measurements are 2.25” x 5.25”.
A most interesting piece of American cultural history with deep ties to the Civil War period and one of its most consequential happenings. [cm][ph:L]
