A post-war autograph of Confederate Major General Lafayette McLaws (1821–1897), whose division saw hard service at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville and anchored Longstreet's assault on the second day at Gettysburg. After the war McLaws settled in Savannah and, through his friendship with U.S. Grant, was appointed U.S. Collector of Internal Revenue for the District of Georgia (1875–76), later serving as Postmaster of Savannah (1876–1884).

Here McLaws signs the "Collector" line of an original Series of 1876 United States Internal Revenue "Stamp for Special Tax" for a Dealer in Manufactured Tobacco, State of Georgia — a tangible record of his federal service in the year of his appointment. Engraved and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in the familiar large format: the seated allegorical figure with the American eagle amid taxed goods (cigars, tobacco casks, spirits), the red Internal Revenue seal and red serial No. D27452, and the "5 Dollars Per Year" denomination, beneath the statutory warning of "Severe Penalties" for failure to display the stamp. Partially completed in period ink; coupons and stub separated, leaving the main certificate, approximately 7 x 8 inches.

Condition: Even toning, light edge wear with a few minor chips, central cancellation punch-outs as issued. A double-association piece uniting a noted Confederate general with a Reconstruction-era U.S. Internal Revenue document.  [ss] [ph:L]
