An autograph letter signed by General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818–1893), among the most instantly recognizable commanders of the Confederate States Army. Penned in dark ink on a folded sheet of personal stationery embossed at the upper left with a small blind crest, the letter reads in full:

"New Orleans, Nov. 8th 1881 — Dear Sir — I send you with the pleasure my autograph, as requested in your letter of the 11th inst. I am, Yours very truly, G. T. Beauregard."

A gracious reply to a period autograph collector's request, boldly signed with Beauregard's full flourished signature and characteristic sweeping paraph  — a clean, highly displayable example of the general's hand.

A Louisiana Creole and West Point graduate (Class of 1838), Beauregard directed the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861 that opened the Civil War, earning lasting fame as the "Hero of Sumter." He commanded the field at First Manassas, served as second-in-command to Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh, and later directed the defenses of Charleston and the Carolinas campaign. At the time of this letter he had long since settled in New Orleans, where he supervised the drawings of the Louisiana State Lottery and remained an active correspondent until his death in 1893.

Condition: Cream-toned letter sheet with the usual mailing folds; bright, legible ink and a strong signature. Light age toning commensurate with date. Measures approximately 4½ x 7 in.   [ss] [ph:L]
