Autograph bank check accomplished and boldly signed by James Lawson Kemper (1823–1895), Confederate major general and 37th Governor of Virginia. Drawn on The State Bank of Virginia, Richmond, check No. 345, dated January 1, 1886, in the amount of fifty-one dollars ($51 00/100), payable to the order of Mrs. Letitia A. Barnes and signed in ink at lower right, "J. L. Kemper."

Printed on the State Bank of Virginia form by A. Hoen & Co. of Richmond, with a finely steel-engraved vignette of the State Bank Building at left. A purple oval bank cancellation (The State Bank of Virginia, Richmond, Jan. 21, 1886) is struck across the face. The verso carries the payee's period ink endorsement, "Letitia A. Barnes," along with collection and receipt markings of the First National Bank of Richmond, Va., and the First National Bank of Alexandria, Va. (Chas. R. Hooff, Cashier).

A desirable association piece signed during Kemper's retirement at "Walnut Hills," Orange County, nearly a decade after leaving the governorship and more than two decades after the wound he received at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 — an injury that troubled him the rest of his life. Kemper was the youngest brigade commander, and the only non-professional soldier, in the division that made Pickett's Charge.

Measures approximately 7 x 2¾ in. Expected age toning, a central vertical fold and light edge wear with minor splitting along the folds; the signature clear, dark, and fully legible. A clean, displayable example of a scarce Confederate general / Virginia governor autograph in financial-document form.   [ss][ph:L]
