An attractive blue engraved stock certificate of the Rockbridge Company of Glasgow, Virginia, boldly signed as president by Fitzhugh Lee (1835–1905) — Confederate cavalry general, nephew of Robert E. Lee, 40th Governor of Virginia, and later U.S. Consul-General at Havana and major general of U.S. Volunteers in the Spanish-American War.
Certificate No. 268, issued to Mrs. M. E. Brice for seventy (70) shares of preferred stock at $100 par value, dated at Glasgow, Virginia, February 21, 1892. Incorporated under the laws of Virginia, authorized capital $5,000,000. Handsome spread-eagle vignette at top, marked "FULL PAID — NON-ASSESSABLE," and printed by A. Hoen & Co., Richmond. Countersigned by the company's secretary and treasurer. The verso carries the embossed Rockbridge Company corporate seal and an unexecuted transfer/assignment form.
The Rockbridge Company was the principal developer behind the short-lived industrial boomtown of Glasgow, Virginia, organized in 1890 near the confluence of the James and Maury rivers and within sight of Natural Bridge. With Fitz Lee — fresh from the governor's chair — as its public face, the company platted broad avenues and drew heavy Northern and British investment before the boom faltered in 1891 and collapsed in the Panic of 1893. A desirable association piece tying one of Virginia's most celebrated postwar figures to the speculative fever of the New South.
Measures approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. Folds as issued and light age toning; complete, uncancelled, and display-ready, with a bold Fitzhugh Lee signature. [ss][ph:L]
