Isaac Butt was an Irish barrister, economist, and Member of Parliament who founded the Home Rule movement and was the first to make "Home Rule" an effective political rallying cry. A Donegal-born Trinity College graduate and that institution's first professor of political economy, Butt began his career as a conservative unionist before becoming Ireland's foremost nationalist leader of his generation. He earned national stature defending the Young Ireland leaders on charges of high treason in 1848 and serving as principal counsel for the imprisoned Fenians from 1865 to 1869. In May 1870 he founded the Home Government Association, launching the parliamentary nationalist tradition later carried forward by Charles Stewart Parnell, who succeeded him as leader of the movement in 1878. Butt sat in the House of Commons from 1852 to 1865 and again from 1871 until his death in 1879.
