Commander Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers, from Brooklyn, New York, served in the Mexican-American War prior to the Civil War. In command of the flagship frigate U.S.S. Wabash during the Civil War, Rodgers and his ship led one of the largest expeditionary forces in US History to victory at Port Royal, SC.  He also led the Union Naval landing party that occupied St. Augustine in March 1862 and was later transferred to the staff of Rear Admiral Samuel F. DuPont, commander of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He retired in 1881 after serving as Superintendent of the Naval Academy.

In this letter, written on April 13, 1864, Rodgers responds from the U.S.S. Iroquois to a request for his autograph as a fundraising contribution to a soldiers’ aid fair.  In it, he modestly assumes his signature is of little value, but happily offers it to the sender for any benefit it may provide to wounded soldiers.  He ends by writing, “As a citizen of New Jersey, I feel much interest and sympathy towards every undertaking intended to benefit its sons, who have devoted themselves to the cause of the Union.”

The letter encompasses one side of a single piece of lined paper.  Slight edge discoloration is noted at top, with a small area or very light rolling.  A miniscule spot of edge damage is noted at left.  Condition is otherwise very good and all writing remains bold and legible.  Ink has oxidized to an appropriate shade of dark brown.  Dimensions are 7.7” x 9.7”.  [cm][ph:L]
