A bold autograph signature of Confederate Lieutenant General John Brown Gordon, signed "J.B. Gordon" with "Georgia" beneath in his own hand. The state designation indicates the piece dates from Gordon's tenure as a United States Senator from Georgia (1873–1880 and 1891–1897), when he commonly appended his state — a useful dating clue and an attractive feature for collectors.

Gordon was among Robert E. Lee's most trusted and capable lieutenants. He was famously wounded five times at Antietam, fought at Gettysburg, led the last great Confederate offensive at Fort Stedman in March 1865, and commanded the Confederate infantry at the formal surrender at Appomattox Court House. He went on to become one of the dominant figures in postwar Georgia politics, serving as U.S. Senator and as Governor (1886–1890), and authored the widely read memoir Reminiscences of the Civil War (1903).

The signature is clipped from a larger sheet or album leaf and measures approximately 5¾ x 3 inches. Penned in dark ink, clear and fully legible. Mounting remnants and minor edge irregularity along the left margin, consistent with prior removal from an album; now housed in a protective sleeve.
