This one page document, handwritten in ink, measures 8 ¼” x 10”. It is dated “16.5.15 11h”, translating to 11AM, May 16 2015.  The letter is written in French in a strong, bold hand, completely legible.  It is signed “F Foch” below the main body of the letter, and again “FF” at the very bottom. Included is a typewritten transcription translated into English; the document reads as follows:

Note

We must stop with these attacks which include fixed timetables (18:30), depending upon uncertain results.

The attack commander ought to establish the hour of the attack when he is certain that the firepower is in order.

If this fact is established, the desired results can be obtained by a heavy barrage, which will be lifted in time for the infantry to be ready to take advantage of it.

F. Foch

We must likewise make certain of the precise departure of the infantry at the end of the barrage; to do this, have them remain prone in front of the trenches during the last five minutes of the heavy barrage.

FF

Marshal Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) was a French general, Marshal of France and a member of the Academie Francaise and Academie des Sciences. He distinguished himself as Supreme Allied Commander on the Western Front during the First World War in 1918. A full biography may be found here.

The document is in excellent condition with just some very minor, tiny chipping along the top edge.  [ld][ph:L]
