This official French government document, from the Bulletin des Lois de la Republique, no. 271, contains the legislation and accompanying instructions concerning a military levy of 200,000 men during the War of the Second Coalition.  The bulletin de Lois was the official vehicle through which laws of the French Republic were distributed to government authorities.

Printed at Paris by the Imprimerie de la Republique, this document dates to 28 – 29 Germinal Year VII of the French Republic – corresponding to April 17 – 18, 1799. The law in question was passed as France faced a dangerous European war.  By 1799, France was fighting the forces of the Second Coalition and the Directory urgently sought additional manpower for military needs. Further text provides instructions for localities in the selection of men, their organization, appointing of officers, accounting procedures, types of equipment and their subsequent issue (2 Shirts, 2 Pairs of Shoes, 2 Pairs of Stockings, 1 Haversack – per man), and possible movements.

Printed on laid paper, the edges show deckling and minor wear consistent with over 225 years of age.  Light toning is noted and all printing remains bold and legible. The leaves are folded vertically at center into a booklet, encompassing 12 pages in all.  Dimensions (folded) are approximately 5.2” x 8.5”.
