Autograph letter signed by Anson G. McCook, one of the famous "Fighting McCooks" of Ohio, on letterhead of the "City of New York, Office of the City Chamberlain," with the city seal printed in blue. It is dated January 25th, 1897, and addressed to E. C. Brown, Esq.:
"My Dear Sir: You have my thanks for your kind note enclosing two (2) tickets for the Opening Ceremonials attending the Gas Exposition on the 27th inst. If at all possible it will afford me much pleasure to accept and to attend upon that occasion. Yours truly, Anson G. McCook"
The signature is large and bold.
McCook belonged to the remarkable Ohio family that sent fifteen men into Union service, including several generals, which earned them the name the "Fighting McCooks." Anson enlisted in 1861 and served as a captain in the 2nd Ohio Infantry at First Bull Run. He later commanded the regiment as its colonel at Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and through the Atlanta Campaign. He finished the war as colonel of the 194th Ohio and was brevetted brigadier general.
After the war he moved to New York and had a long public career. He served three terms in Congress (1877–1883) and was Secretary of the United States Senate (1883–1893). He was then appointed Chamberlain of the City of New York, the city's chief financial custodian, a post he held when he wrote this letter.
Condition: Single sheet with two horizontal folds and light toning. The ink is dark and clean. There are later pencil notations, "Gen. McCook" on the front and "Anson McCook – Major General" on the reverse. Dimensions are 5.5” x 8.5”.
A very nice, displayable example for the historic Ohio or Civil War collector. [cm][ph:L]
