Partly printed stock certificate of the Oakland Plank Road Company, Jefferson County, Ky., No. 38 (numeral partly obscured), dated May 5, 1852. The certificate states that James Thornberry (name as read) is the holder of eighteen shares of stock in the Company, of the value of fifty dollars each, transferable to his order upon the books of the Company on return of the certificate. Signed in ink by W. H. Churchill, President, and E. Thompson, Treasurer. Printer's imprint at the foot reads "Varieties, print--Pearl Street--Louisville." Handsome display-type heading, ornamental engine-turned border at the left edge, and manuscript fill in a fine period hand. Approximately 5 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches.
Plank roads, toll highways surfaced with wooden planks, were a popular transportation investment in the early 1850s, and numerous companies were chartered in Kentucky to improve the approaches to Louisville. Certificates of this kind document the local, small-investor capital behind that building boom, in the years just before the railroad came to dominate.
CONDITION: Even toning, three soft vertical folds, light edge wear. Two darker rectangular stained areas on the face at left and right, possibly from former mounting hinges or tape. Ink bold and legible. Housed in a clear archival sleeve. [ss][ph:L]
